Deepwater Horizon (2016)

Sometimes you
just want to see things
explode

star-studded cast
John Malkovich
for God’s sake
with an accent
like Lux Interior

Mark Wahlberg
sports a blue-collar tummy
ageing with the benefit
of a Hollywood skin regime
Loving wife by Kate Hudson

(Her dad
had a psychedelic kids’ program, the
Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show
sets/costumes exploding colour
three telegenic talents and their
feathered brown hair
musical kookiness
absorbed like an oil slick
into my childish DNA)

Kate Hudson’s mother’s boyfriend
Kurt Russell as
wounded warrior
former child actor and star of
The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969),
Disney, likewise leaving me
scarred.
There was way too much Disney
in my childhood, none of it
resembling my life

wholesome morals
bourgeois bromides drilled
into the pliable mind

Here Russell the righteous patriarch
as opposed to teenage genius;
archetypes to aspire to

Where’s the Disney feature
about the cartoon fish
suffocating
in crude oil?

Deepwater Horizon’s pyrotechnics
programmed for punch in Montreal
give way to battered survivors
kneeling en masse to pray

Unreligious
ignorant of the customs
aboard Gulf of Mexico oil rigs
I wonder
What the hell are they doing?

Corruption, heroism
ecocatastrophe
blood
flames
God
